Thursday 7th December
“Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise person, who builds a house upon rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
Building a house sounds like an awful lot of work. There is planning, finding a good site, purchasing materials, laying foundations and then the build and finishing. I find myself exhausted even thinking about the prospect – and the biggest thing I have ever built is a garden shed!
My husband is from the mountains in North Carolina and on one of the backroads there is a house which grew piece by piece. It seemed each time we went by the inhabitants had added an extra room somewhere.
I think the dwellings which we become for Jesus are much more like this house. As we go through life we change and grow and how we “house” God is different. The foundation matters, though.
What is the foundation of your faith? It is not unusual for people to have one or more crises of faith during their lives and to discover that, somehow, things are “off center”. At this season of the year we are invited to find the center of our spiritual lives, and to line ourselves up with the great blessing which is coming in Jesus.
“Lord, as we journey towards your coming, let me see my feet on the path towards you. Where I am wandering, remind me that you are my firm foundation, and help me to build my life as a dwelling place for you. Amen”
