Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

This Sunday, four new Stephen Ministers have accepted the call to serve their fellow parishioners in times of challenge or crisis. Bob Grovenstein, Ron Kessner, Lynn Oglesby, and Peggy Davis have completed 50 hours of training to offer confidential and Christian care. As Stephen Ministers, they have been trained to listen to, care for, pray and walk with those who are hurting and going through difficult times in their life.

Stephen Ministries St. Louis was founded in 1975, and now thrives in thousands of congregations the world over. The ministry was first introduced at Christ Church fifteen years ago. Stephen Ministers follow the example of their namesake, Stephen, one of the first seven Deacons of the church appointed by the Apostles, who charged him with the care of the poor and needy.

*Stephen Ministers are the After People.  Stephen Ministers are there:

. . . after the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

. . . after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.

. . . after the relationship falls apart and the bottom falls out of your life.

. . . after the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.

. . . after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”

. . . after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away – and the house suddenly seems empty.

. . . after the gavel comes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.

. . . after the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

. . . after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

. . . after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors or relatives to provide comfort and support as long after as needed. If you believe a Stephen Minister might help you or someone you know, please contact Landon Leiker, Pastoral Care Coordinator at or call 285 6127 ext. 228.
